Achalasia treatments overview
The proper treatment for each patient will be determined by the physician, in consultation with the patient, after test results are evaluated.
Achalasia treatments include:
- Medication
- Botulinum Toxin injections
- Pneumatic dilatation (balloon dilation) - In this procedure, under sedation, a balloon is inserted into the esophagus and slowly inflated to stretch and tear the constricted esophageal sphincter. It is effective in a large percentage of patients, although some patients may require a subsequent dilatation.
- Heller myotomy - In this surgical procedure, which is performed through several small incisions in the chest, the constricted esophageal muscles are cut allowing food to pass freely into the stomach.
