Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal Cancer

The Temple colorectal cancer team combines the experience, technical skill and deep multidisciplinary support needed to control all aspects of care for high-risk patients with the most challenging cases.

Headed up by specialists in gastroenterology, surgery, medical and radiation oncology, our team's highest priority is to remove cancerous cells at the primary tumor site and wherever they may have spread. We also aim to address complications, maximize survival and patient quality of life, minimize side effects and preserve normal function while avoiding the need for a permanent colostomy.

Every patient receives a comprehensive pretreatment workup, a customized plan for therapy and a program for follow-up and support.

Determination Plus Innovation in Managing the Most Complex Cases

Amilia D., 68, came to Temple suffering from unexplained weight loss and severe stomach cramps. A colonoscopy revealed that a large lesion was completely obstructing her colon. Biopsies confirmed that it was cancerous, and further tests showed two lesions on her liver.

Because Amilia also had other significant health problems, a course of radiation and chemotherapy was initiated instead of surgery. When her colon became completely obstructed, she underwent surgery to receive a colonic stent. The stent relieved Amilia's symptoms but was not a long-term solution for her cancer. Ultimately, Amelia underwent colonic resection surgery and received a colostomy bag so she could resume chemotherapy.

Over the course of her two years of care at Temple, Amilia has maintained a good quality of life despite having stage IV colorectal cancer. By constantly monitoring her status and responding to her needs by making frequent adjustments in treatment, Temple's multidisciplinary team was able to provide Amilia with the best outcome for the longest time.
